The main concern of software development leaders is wasting time, according to Tempo survey

BOSTON–(COMMERCIAL THREAD) –Tempo software, a leader in team time management and productivity improvement solutions, today announced the results of a time management survey of 800 software development managers across North America and in Europe to understand how and why development teams keep up with time. The survey found that understanding and managing team capabilities is a priority, and software developers are turning to automation to eliminate mundane tasks that waste developers’ time.

Each organization surveyed tracks the time developers spend on development projects. When asked what the top concerns about IT talent and software development were, survey respondents indicated:

  • Wasting time on mundane tasks that don’t add value (56%)

  • The need to increase capacity through automation (46%)

  • Use legacy processes that don’t reflect today’s tech landscape (42%)

  • Lack of talent or ability to perform necessary tasks (39%)

Almost half of the organizations surveyed (44%) track daily time, while another 44% monitor weekly. The high frequency with which surveyed organizations track time indicated the need to have a clear view of how time and effort are being invested – and the need to make time tracking transparent in order to save time. time every day.

Businesses are looking for automation to increase capacity and save time. While the majority of respondents (79%) are already ramping up development and engineering work with automation tools to speed up decision making, this hasn’t fully extended to how time is tracked. . Thirty-four percent of respondents still track time manually with spreadsheets, with the remaining two-thirds using tools developed in-house (41%) or time-tracking software they’ve purchased (23%). An automated approach to time tracking has not reached the same level of adoption as other automated software development tools.

As development teams are more dispersed than ever, they need time and capacity reports at their fingertips for planning and forecasting purposes. Respondents indicated that they used time tracking information to inform:

  • Collaborative work management (59%)

  • Project and portfolio management (55%)

  • Workforce management (48%)

  • Product management and roadmap (46%)

  • Agile enterprise planning (28%)

  • Value chain management (28%)

“A deep understanding of how time is invested is what sets high performing organizations apart,” said Mark Lorion, CEO of Tempo Software. “This survey confirms that having information on how developers spend their time is a frequent need, but some organizations still manually record time, even when other aspects of software development are automated. Making time tracking and reporting easier with an automated solution will lead to better returns on developer time and improve planning and budgeting.

The summary of the results of the Tempo Developer Time Management Survey includes:

  • 79% of organizations are already increasing development / engineering work with automation tools to accelerate decision making. 16% of those surveyed said they plan to use automation in the future.

  • 41% of those questioned keep track of time with tools developed in-house; 34% track time manually with spreadsheets and 23% of respondents use purchased time tracking software.
