Nexteer Automotive elevates the organization of software engineering

AUBURN HILLS, Michigan., April 29, 2021 / PRNewswire / – As vehicles increasingly become cloud-connected devices, the needs of global OEMs are growing exponentially for software steering functionality and other software-centric motion control applications. As a result, Nexteer Automotive is elevating its global software engineering organization to meet the ever-expanding software needs of its global OEM customer base.

Improvement of the software organization

Nexteer’s new organizational improvement creates a Single strategic software team at four global sites within Nexteer, including the global technical center of Saginaw, Michigan, Tychy Regional Technical Centers, Poland and Suzhou, China as well as a Software Center in Bengaluru, India. Previously, software engineering expertise was distributed among the various teams in the company and reported separately through product lines and R&D.

The newly formed team reports directly to the CTO of the company.

Nexteer’s centralized software team will support electric power steering (EPS) systems and the development of advanced steering functions. In addition, the new structure will also support software-related R&D projects, including software solutions that could be cloud-based or reside in a centralized chassis domain controller.

Software R&D collaborations

Nexteer’s new software engineering structure aligns with R&D collaborations on two fronts with CNXMotion and Tactile Mobility.

Nexteer develops motion control solutions with CNXMotion, the company’s joint venture with Continental. In addition, Nexteer is exploring advanced steering safety features such as real-time road surface detection in collaboration with Tactile Mobility, a leading Israel-based virtual tactile data and detection company.

Benefits of high software organization

Nexteer expects from the optimized organizational structure:

  • Accelerate lead times from innovation to production
  • Capitalize on the exponential growth of motion control software solutions
  • Improve global collaboration within Nexteer and its external partners
  • Improve customer service, OEM technical consultation, software development and support
  • Maximize Nexteer’s software value proposition

“Nexteer’s new software engineering structure will accelerate Nexteer’s production innovation timeline as we build closer ties between our software teams, from initial innovation through continuation and preparation for launch.” , said Robin milavec, Senior Vice President, Executive Board Director, Chief Technology Officer and Chief Strategy Officer, Nexteer Automotive. “This new structure allows us to meet growing software demands, shorten lead times, maximize our value proposition and capitalize on emerging software product opportunities.

Nexteer plays a vital role in the “modern automotive value chain” by providing complex software and electronics solutions that enable advanced steering functions and more. This exponential growth and technological disruption requires an increased level of support and focus on advanced management solutions from Nexteer.

“Nexteer’s team of software experts at four global locations collectively drive operational excellence – working together as a single team to develop, validate and launch software for production,” continued Milavec. “Elevating our software engineering structure will allow us to further ensure the quality and compliance of increasingly complex software functionality with our global OEM customers.”

Software plays an important role in today’s vehicles when it comes to safety and advanced performance. From a safety perspective, the steering software plays a crucial role in providing steering assistance as well as enabling advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) such as park assist, lane keeping, lane departure warning, traffic jam assistance, etc.

In the future, automotive software will also play a key role in enabling autonomous vehicles, along with additional advanced safety and performance features. This is of critical importance as today’s hardware-defined vehicles are rapidly transforming into software-defined transport platforms.
