The Motilal Nehru National Institute of Technology (MNNIT) -Allahabad had taken steps to shut down its once popular MTech software engineering program and no new admissions to this postgraduate course would take place now, officials said.

This decision was prompted by declining interest from top budding technicians as well as companies participating in the placement exercise.

The institute’s Senate approved a proposal in this regard at its recent meeting. The proposal would now be submitted to the institute’s highest decision-making body, the Board of Governors (BoG), for final approval, MNNIT director Professor Rajeev Tripathi confirmed.

He said the institute instead planned to double the number of seats in the MTech computer and engineering course from the existing 25 to 50. This step follows an in-depth study undertaken by the institute.

“A review of previous records showed that MTech in the software engineering program did not have the top aspirants’ preference over the MTech computer science and engineering course, and as a result, MTech software engineering attracted many aspirants. less deserving. We also observed that even the companies that hire our students preferred MTech IT and Engineering transfers to MTech Software Engineering transfers, finding that the IT and Engineering course was more holistic and covered a wider range. skills and knowledge. compared to software engineering which they perceived as focusing only on software design and testing, ”he explained.

Prof Tripathi said that although the MTech in Software Engineering is a solid and well-designed course, covering all essential ESC topics but having specialized electives, the institute has decided to strictly follow the demand and to close the graduate program in software engineering.

“MTech’s 25 places in Software Engineering would now be merged into MTech’s Computer Science and Engineering course, which remains the top choice for aspiring technicians attracting top rankings from across the country, accommodating 50 students. We are convinced that this would not only attract better students, but also ensure better internships, ”he said.
