But recently coming in second – just behind the internationally renowned Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) – was a welcome surprise, Miami officials said.

Eric Bachmann, professor and chair of the Miami Computer Science and Software Engineering Department at the College of Engineering and Computer Science (CEC), said Miami’s high national ranking in programming and computer skills is important and deserved.

“In the Computer Science and Software Engineering department, all majors begin their studies with rigorous hands-on experiences that develop strong programming skills,” Bachmann said.

“Once students have mastered both ‘reading and writing’, they move on to advanced courses in areas such as graphics, artificial intelligence, machine learning, computer vision, and arithmetic. high performance, security, robotics and image processing, ”he said in a statement released by Miami.

The annual rankings come from CodeSignal, a digital job candidate assessment company established in 2015 to help the tech industry use an objective, competency-based assessment platform that can be used as a standard for performance. technical hiring.

CodeSignal’s General Coding Assessment (GCA) is a standardized test for basic programming and computer skills shared by most software engineers and taught in most undergraduate computer science programs in the United States. .

CodeSignal’s GCA is used by more than 150 leading companies such as Facebook, Asana, Uber, and eBay as the primary technical assessment of young talent.

But computing and software engineering go far beyond coding and programming, Bachmann said.

“A computer scientist or software engineer who can’t code is like an English student who can’t write a sentence. Sentences flow from paragraphs, chapters and novels,” he said. “Likewise, strong coding skills are the foundation upon which computer technologies transforming society are built.”

Bachmann said the students are applying their skills in both design and programming to implement the next generation of algorithms.

“While some schools may consider beginner and intermediate programming courses to be less important than higher level advanced courses, at the University of Miami the faculty considers them very important and many of our top instructors teach these courses. . “

Miami College of Engineering and Computer Science has 1,881 undergraduates in four CEC departments on the Oxford campus, including 641 in computer science and 150 in software engineering.

CEC’s overall placement success rate was 96.7%, according to Miami’s Institutional Research, “First Destinations of 2019-2020 Miami University Graduates”.
